THE PACKFIRE COMMUNITY: Ryan Heck

Ryan Heck is an outdoor and adventure photographer based in Oregon, where the forests, rivers, and open landscapes have shaped both his work and the way his family spends their time. As the creator behind Trekker Heck Photography, Ryan finds himself drawn to the kind of places that make you want to put your phone down and just be present — and living in the Pacific Northwest means those places are rarely more than an hour away.

At the heart of what Ryan does is a simple belief that the best moments happen when you slow down and actually settle into a place. That might look like a day hike that turns into a picnic, a camping trip with nowhere specific to be, or a day at their river spot. He's always working with light and finding real moments. And the ones that matter most usually involve the people he loves most.

On his first use of the PACKFIRE, he found out how easy it was to have a fire set right on the river rock and sand, old-growth trees all around, kids in and out of the water all afternoon. It packed in easily, set up in a minute, and soon there was a fire going in a spot that felt like it had been waiting for one. That's what portability actually means in practice: you're not limited to the campsite with the designated ring. You can build the day around the place, not the other way around.

Some of Ryan's favorite moments from that afternoon had nothing to do with the camera. Kids throwing rocks and sticks into the river, everybody finding a spot around the fire, the pace of the day just naturally slowing down. PACKFIRE made it easy to bring more depth to the day, to somewhere truly special, and the kind of family time it created is exactly what days like that are for.
